WHO WE ARE


The SPEECH/ACT crew is made up of award-winning storytellers, directors, educators, writers, and organizers.  Our instructors have partnered with organizations including Doctors without Borders, Lincoln Center Education, The Moth, Caring Across Generations, the Supportive Housing Network, CT League of Women Voters, Reproductive Health Access Project (RHAP), and Girls Who Code to help craft stories that change laws and lives.

Our Founders

Onnesha Roychoudhuri is a Brooklyn-based writer and educator. She has partnered with a range of progressive organizations and politicians--from Doctors Without Borders and Human Rights Watch to Sandra Fluke and Howard Dean--to create powerful messages through framing and storytelling. She also has an extensive background in journalism, having worked for and contributed to publications such as Rolling Stone, Wired, Mother Jones, and the Nation. Her forthcoming book, The Marginalized Majority: Claiming Our Power in a Post-Truth America, explores how storytelling can change our political landscape, and will be published by Melville House Books in July 2018.

Julian Goldhagen is an artist, educator, and organizer based in Brooklyn, New York.  His original performance work has been featured at the NYC International Fringe Festival, The Beacon Theater, and the United Nations Palais de Nacion. Julian has been facilitating personal storytelling workshops since 2012, and has worked with groups including Just Leadership USA, The Urban Justice Center, and SAGE--as well as in public schools across New York City. He is a proudly sex-positive socialist, and recently helped organize the country's first unionized sex shop. Julian is currently pursuing his Masters in Social Work at The Silberman School of Social Work, Hunter College--with a focus on Community Organizing, Planning, and Development.

Catherine McCarthy is the co-founder and manager of The Moth's Education Program, spearheading a movement of students and educators who build community and challenge dominant narratives through personal storytelling. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Social Work at Fordham University.  She is a story director for the Moth Mainstage, and is the co-editor of the Penguin Random House Teacher's Guide for The Moth: All These Wonders.  She has facilitated storytelling workshops for the US State Department, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, The DreamYard Project, and more. She also directed the acclaimed solo show The Secret Life of Your Third Grade Teacher at the 2016 NYC Fringe Festival.

Casey Donahue has been helping people shape their personal experiences into powerful stories since 2012.  Casey holds an M.Div from Union Theological Seminary in inter-religious engagement, and has partnered with organizations such as the Supportive Housing Network, Caring Across Generations, Literary Arts, Girls Who Code, Pioneerworks, and the American Jewish Historical Society to shape personal narratives into live performances.  Casey is the Manager of The Moth's Community Program and teaches in the Moth's Education program.  As the Moth's former Curatorial Associate, Casey has screened thousands of stories and pitches, and can be heard interviewing storytellers on the Moth Podcast and website.
